The 1986 Bathurst winner was the last win by a privateer / independent, racing without major support by a manufacturer. Allan Grice had been racing at Bathurst for fifteen years, and this was his first ever win. His co-driver Graeme Bailey was his financial backer, a chicken farmer from New South Wales and he was seen as more of a gentleman driver.
